ESSAY SPECIALIST
Ron Shapiro
Ron Shapiro is a 44-year veteran of teaching English in both Delaware and Fairfax County Public Schools. Over the span of his career, he has mentored thousands of students with their writing. With an undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware and an M.A. in the Teaching of Writing from Northeastern University, Ron has valuable experience sharing his passion for the importance of writing and especially in the area of revision.
Able to relate to students from all backgrounds, Ron understands how working one-on-one with a student can bring about meaningful results. Adhering to the belief of “making it messy to make it good,” Ron has guided students through each stage of the writing process and, in turn, transformed young writers’ attitudes towards the importance of revision and how the more one writes, the more one thinks. Because we are the stories we tell, his experience with both teaching and writing personal narrative fits perfectly with the college essay genre.
To cap off Ron’s successful teaching career, Cornell University has recognized his accomplishments with an Outstanding Educator Award. As a seasoned memoir writing teacher, Ron currently facilitates such a course in the Osher Lifelong Learning Academy on the campus of George Mason University. He is a member of both the Pennsylvania and Northern Virginia Writing Projects. His hobbies include writing, reading, cooking, and nature walking.
