COUNSELOR
Kim Heffernan
Kim thoughtfully guides each of her clients through all facets of the college admissions process: selecting appropriate coursework, developing authentic extracurriculars, conducting college research to find the best fit, developing and refining a balanced college list, managing the applications timeline, creating meaningful essays, and more. She’s spoken to various parent and student organizations on topics ranging from optimizing college visits to understanding AP coursework to successfully transitioning from high school to college. She believes that each student has a unique story to tell, and she enjoys demonstrating how to weave their personal narrative throughout their college applications.
Kim’s thorough understanding of the college admissions process stems from years of experience as a higher ed teacher, a community leader, an advocate for underserved high school students, and a parent. A former professor at the University of Maryland College Park and Montgomery College, Kim appreciates the academic demands expected from today’s college students. She chaired the Counseling Advisory Committee at a large Montgomery County high school for many years – working closely with counselors, administrators, and parents to provide college admissions, academic, and mental health information to the high school community. She’s also worked with first-generation and minority students to prepare for and apply to college through a local non-profit. A mom of three (two post-graduate students and one current college student), she brings an invaluable parent’s perspective to the college admissions journey.
Kim holds a Master of Public Health from the University of Maryland College Park and a Bachelor of Arts in History and Communication from Tulane University. She is a member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA) and the and Higher Education Consultants Association (HECA).
“Working with Moxie immensely transformed my college search and application process. Kim Heffernan’s guidance was honestly what got me through this past fall; I went from an overly stressed student to a relaxed, prepared applicant. Kim helped me plan out when I would complete each part of my application, and without her organization, I’m not sure if I would’ve finished everything on time! The routine check-ins, through Zoom or email, kept me on the right track and eventually saved me from drowning in work at the beginning of January. Overall, her support and expertise made this experience significantly better than I ever could’ve imagined. I’ll never forget how sweet and genuinely excited the message she sent me was when I got into one of my top choices. Thank you, Kim!”
