Making the Most of the Summer After High School Graduation

By Published On: June 5th, 2025

Congratulations! Graduating from high school is a huge milestone, and you’ve made it. One chapter of your life is wrapped up, and you are about to dive into the next. For those planning to start college in the fall, you have numerous opportunities to make the most of your summer. Remember, this isn’t just any summer — it’s your summer. Here are some suggestions for what to do with it:

Celebrate!

After spending the last four years balancing academics, extracurriculars, and everything in between, you’ve earned the right to take a deep breath and celebrate your hard work. Whether it’s a party, a trip, or just a quiet moment with friends and family, don’t skip this important step by rewarding yourself!

Explore Your World

Going on an adventure can be one of the most memorable things you can do this summer, and you don’t need a passport or a big travel budget to do it. No matter where you go, travel can broaden your perspective, help you gain independence, and create lasting memories. Even going on a short road trip offers an exciting opportunity to break free from your usual surroundings. If a globetrotting adventure isn’t in the cards, try visiting a new town nearby or exploring museums, parks, and landmarks in your area.

Get a Summer Job

It’s no secret that college is expensive. Even small, everyday expenditures can add up. That’s why many students choose to spend the summer before college working. This doesn’t just help you earn money for school — it also builds responsibility, adds to your resume, and teaches real-world skills. Even part-time roles in retail or food service can be valuable for developing skills like communication, teamwork, time management, and professionalism.

Take a Class or Learn a New Skill

While enrolling in a summer course is a great way to supplement your academic preparation for college, you may also want to take advantage of classes that you’ve never had time for — like photography, coding, cooking, or a new language. There are many sources for free or affordable courses. Learning a new skill can be fun, keep your mind sharp, and even give you a leg up in college or job applications.

Spend Time with Loved Ones

This summer might be one of the last times all your high school friends are living in the same place. Make the most of it. Have fun. Get together for movie nights, meals, group outings — or just hang out and reminisce. Don’t forget quality time with your family, too. Always remember that your support system is important at any given time of your life. Cherish it.

Reflect and Set Goals for the Future

Now is a great time to reflect on your high school experience. What did you learn about yourself? What are your values, goals, and dreams? Consider recording your answers by journaling or creating a vision board. Taking stock of your experiences can help you start the next chapter of your life with intention.

Prepare for the Upcoming Year

If you’re heading to college, this is a good time to get organized: shop for essentials, learn more about your college campus and your major, and connect with your future classmates. Join online forums or social media groups for incoming freshmen. Getting ahead can ease anxiety and build confidence.

Volunteer

Now is a great time to give back to your community. Not only is volunteering vital for building strong communities and helping those in need, but it can be deeply rewarding and keeps you grounded. Whether you choose to help at a local shelter, mentor younger students, or organize a community clean-up, you’ll gain perspective—and maybe even discover a new passion.

Prioritize Self-Care

Your mental and physical health are very important and should be maintained throughout your life. Be sure to prioritize things like exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and eating well, as these are healthy habits you’ll need for the future when your life becomes more fast-paced.

Live in the Moment

We live in a society that is focused on planning and productivity. However, it’s perfectly fine to do nothing sometimes. Watch the sun set. Stay up late talking. Watch a movie. Read for fun. Let this be a season of joy, relaxation, and discovery — not just preparation.
