Meet Melissa

Having spent her entire career in and around higher education, Melissa Harrington brings a wealth of experience in college counseling, financial aid, student support services, and academic advising. As an independent educational consultant, Melissa focuses not only on college admission but also on long-term success and retention. She believes that finding the right fit—academically, socially/emotionally, and financially—is essential for students to thrive and ultimately earn their degrees.

As the parent of two college-aged children, Melissa understands the emotional complexity of the college journey. Students and parents often approach the process with differing goals, values, and expectations. Melissa emphasizes a student-driven approach, while encouraging meaningful and supportive parent involvement. She partners with families to build personalized, practical college plans grounded in healthy boundaries and clear expectations.

Melissa is passionate about helping every student discover their “why” and tell their story. She has worked with hundreds of students from diverse backgrounds, abilities, and interests, and understands the crucial role self-reflection and personal exploration play in the college planning process. She loves helping students translate their values and experiences into a clear roadmap with bite-sized, attainable goals. Her ultimate goal is to transform college planning into a positive, empowering experience—rather than a pressure-filled competition.

Education & Experience

Melissa holds a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts (Economics, Political Science, and Communications) and a Master of Arts in Education, Student Personnel Services, both from Virginia Tech. She is a member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA) and the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC). She actively volunteers with education-focused associations and community-based organizations that support postsecondary planning.

Over the years, Melissa has collaborated with college admissions and financial aid offices, high school counselors and teachers, higher education associations, community-based programs, and national scholarship and bridge initiatives. These partnerships have deepened her expertise in college admissions, financial aid policy, and the true value of a college education.

Originally from Pittsburgh, Melissa has called the DC area home since 1997. She lives in Alexandria City with her husband—also a proud Hokie—their two children (when they’re home on break), and their dog, Otto. Outside of work, Melissa enjoys reading, working out, traveling, and just about anything that doesn’t involve sitting still.
