College Essay Burnout: How to Stay Inspired and On Track
It’s hard to believe it, but the college application season is upon us. If you haven’t already, you may feel overwhelmed at some point — especially when it comes to writing essays. Writing personal statement, supplemental, and scholarship essays is challenging, and it’s easy for even the most motivated students to hit a wall. Burnout is a real thing — but it’s also manageable. Here’s how to recognize it and push through without losing your sanity.
What Are the Symptoms of Burnout?
Burnout in any situation is more than just feeling tired or procrastinating. It’s a deeper form of mental and emotional exhaustion that comes from prolonged stress and pressure. With college essays, burnout can manifest as:
- Constantly staring at a blank screen, unable to “get started”
- Rewriting the same paragraph over and over again
- Feeling like every idea is “wrong”, cliché, or meaningless
- Over-editing, not able to make decisions
- Losing motivation to work on anything application-related
What Causes Burnout?
Most students applying to college are juggling a full course load, extracurriculars, part-time jobs, and social lives. When you add the pressure of writing essays to this — especially when they feel like they could determine your future — you’ve got the perfect recipe for burnout. Because of this, students often:
- Overthink what colleges want to hear
- Try to make every essay sound “perfect”
- Compare themselves to their peers
- Start too late
- Try to do too much at once
How to Combat Burnout
- Take a Break
Sometimes the best way to move forward is to stop for a moment. Walk away from your computer and go for a walk, watch a movie, read something fun, or hang out with friends. Taking a break isn’t being lazy; it’s giving your brain a chance to rest and reset.
- Remind Yourself Why
Ask yourself why you’re doing this. After all, you’re applying to college for a reason. Think about your goals — what you hope to achieve and what kind of impact you want to make. This can refocus and reenergize you, reignite your motivation, and help you write from a place of authenticity.
- Break Writing Down into Smaller Tasks
Small, achievable tasks make things feel far less overwhelming. Checking off each milestone can also be rewarding. Instead of thinking “I have to write ten essays,” take a deep breath and approach writing in smaller steps, such as:
- Brainstorming story ideas
- Writing a rough outline for one supplement
- Editing the intro paragraph of your personal statement to make it more compelling, or perhaps one of your supplemental essays to make it work for additional schools
- Talk to Someone
If you’re stuck, discuss your ideas with a trusted counselor, essay specialist, teacher, or mentor. Talking through your thoughts can generate new ideas and help you figure out what you really want to say. Just remember that this is your essay, so be careful not to lose your voice when considering the suggestions of others.
- Stop Aiming for Perfection
Your essay doesn’t have to be an award-winning piece of literature — its purpose is to help colleges get to know you. Admissions officers want to hear your voice, not a perfectly polished robot, or worse yet — what someone else has written (yes, that includes AI). Focus on honest storytelling from your perspective, not literary genius.
- Don’t Compare Yourself to Others
Comparing your essays to those of others can make you second-guess yourself. Every student has a unique story to tell, and that’s what colleges want to see. Tell yours honestly — in your own words, your own style.
- Make a Realistic Schedule
Getting started early is key. So is setting aside time each week to work on your essays. Just don’t forget to schedule time off as well. Setting boundaries can help you stay productive and avoid burnout.
It’s All About Progress, Not Perfection
While college essays are important, they shouldn’t consume your life. You’re far more than your application, so taking care of your mental and physical health is just as crucial as finishing those final drafts. Trust the process, trust your story, and remember that burnout is a signal — not a setback. Step back when you need to, then get back to writing with fresh eyes and renewed energy.
